Romana’s career has become a transformative experience at NITES: today a Senior Technical Consultant, she joined the company 12 years ago as economist from the public sector and has since than accumulated substantial expertise in working on national-scale telecommunications projects. How did the employee-company synergy make this happen and how is Romana nurturing the next generation of experts at NITES? She shares her success story from Banja Luka office.
You’ve been part of NITES for quite some time. What initially attracted you to the company?
I’ve been with NITES for almost 12 years now, and I can honestly say that both the company and I have evolved side by side. From the day I started until today, I’ve witnessed many milestones achieved by different teams and felt genuine pride in our collective success.
Back when I joined, I was a young economist working in the public sector. The opportunity to move into a company like NITES felt like a dream – it promised new challenges, continuous learning, and a chance to grow in a dynamic, modern industry shaping the future.
At that time, especially in Banja Luka, this kind of position wasn’t common – particularly for someone with an economics background. Many people advised me to stay where I was, to choose stability over risk, especially being a woman. But my instincts told me otherwise. From the moment I first learned about NITES, I felt an immediate connection and curiosity. I decided to take the leap – and looking back now, I can say with full confidence that it was one of the best decisions of my life.
Can you tell us a bit more about your role and responsibilities as a Senior Technical Consultant?
The role carries a lot of responsibility – and plenty of challenges. It requires a combination of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong communication skills. The projects NITES takes on are large, complex, and often business-critical, which means that staying sharp and adaptable is essential.
My work involves every stage of solution delivery: from analyzing business processes and client needs to designing and implementing tailored IT systems. I ensure that solutions are practical, user-friendly, and aligned with the client’s goals. That includes preparing and maintaining technical documentation, coordinating with implementation and development teams, and conducting training sessions for both key and end users.
But my work doesn’t end there. A very important part of my role is knowledge transfer and mentorship – helping younger colleagues develop the skills and confidence to handle their own projects. Watching them grow into capable professionals gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. When someone you’ve mentored reaches a new level in their career, it feels like a shared victory.
How would you describe the atmosphere in your team? What do you value most about it?
The power of teamwork at NITES can’t be overstated. I’m lucky to work with colleagues who are not only experts in their fields but also genuine, humorous, and supportive people. When you’re surrounded by such energy, even the toughest deadlines become manageable.
We work hard to maintain open communication and minimize stress, no matter how demanding a project becomes. Our team functions like a well-coordinated organism – everyone understands their role and contributes to the bigger picture. The more experienced members provide stability and calm during intense phases, while younger colleagues bring fresh perspectives and creative energy that constantly renews our momentum.
That mix – of experience and innovation – is what keeps our work dynamic and our team spirit strong. We genuinely enjoy what we do, and that positivity reflects in every successful delivery.
What do you find most important in the company’s work culture and relationships?
For me, it’s all about synergy, respect, and shared purpose. When people feel heard and valued, collaboration naturally thrives. We all work toward a common goal – delivering high-quality solutions and ensuring client satisfaction – and that shared vision binds us together.
Trust is another essential ingredient. Knowing that your teammates have your back allows you to stay focused and perform at your best. And when challenges arise, we don’t point fingers – we problem-solve together. That culture of mutual support and accountability is one of NITES’s greatest strengths.
How has NITES supported your professional and personal growth?
Over the years, NITES has given me the opportunity to work on some of the largest and most challenging projects in the region – for major telecom operators and even for the Government of the Republic of Srpska. Each project brought new lessons, new skills, and new perspectives.
Through these experiences, I not only strengthened my technical expertise but also learned a lot about leadership, organization, and emotional intelligence. The company continuously invests in learning – I’ve attended numerous trainings, earned internationally recognized Oracle certifications, and gained a deep understanding of modern IT systems and processes.
On a personal level, the sense of community here has been equally important. The supportive relationships, the camaraderie, and the positive atmosphere make it easy to stay motivated and genuinely enjoy coming to work every day.
What are some of the biggest challenges in your role, and how do you overcome them?
Balancing the client’s expectations with what’s technically and practically feasible is always a challenge. Clients often know what they want, but not necessarily how to get there – and that’s where we come in. Finding that balance, where everyone is satisfied, can be stressful, so maintaining calm and focus is key.
Another challenge is communication. As someone who works closely with both technical and business teams, I need to translate complex technical ideas into simple, understandable language – without losing accuracy. Clear communication is what keeps projects running smoothly.
Of course, there’s also the everyday challenge of managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and keeping up with rapid technological change. But I’ve learned that with experience, focus, and agility, even the most complex challenges become opportunities for growth rather than obstacles.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I love that no two days are ever the same in this kind of work – every project brings something new. But if I had to choose one favorite part, it would be the moment when a project goes live successfully. Seeing a satisfied client, knowing that our solution has made their work easier and more efficient, is incredibly rewarding.
Change is never easy, especially at the beginning of a project, when everything feels uncertain. But once you see how the results improve someone’s daily operations, all the effort pays off. That sense of accomplishment and teamwork is what keeps me motivated for the next challenge.
How do you maintain balance between your professional and personal life?
Maintaining balance is crucial – and, admittedly, one of the hardest things to achieve. When you’ve been part of a company for so long, your work becomes deeply intertwined with your personal life. You start seeing your workplace almost as a second home.
Different phases of a project demand different levels of commitment, and if you don’t manage your time and energy wisely, both work and personal life can suffer. I’ve learned to recognize when to slow down, to recharge, and to spend quality time with family and friends. Having hobbies outside of work and setting clear boundaries helps me stay grounded.
I firmly believe that a healthy work-life balance isn’t just good for me – it’s essential for doing great work. Only when you feel fulfilled in both areas can you truly be effective in either.
